I’ll say it again, nothing beats the deals you can get when Bordeaux has a truly great vintage. You don’t buy the big names, but some of the less famous classified growths and the hundreds of unclassified chateaux make fabulous wines for low prices. 2005 represented one of those amazing buying opportunities, which we embraced fully. The benefits continue to pay off as we opened another bottle from our hoard, and found another gem drinking beautifully right now with a long life yet to come. Here’s the wine.
Wine: 2005 Chateau Boyd-Cantenac
Winery Location: Margaux: Bordeaux
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: October 2016
Tasting Notes: the wine is a dark purple red, with just the tiniest amber tinge starting to invade the rim. It presents a rich nose of dark fruit, with blackberry emerging from the earthy background. Hints of tobacco and herbs show as well. It is nicely complex. On the palate there is beautiful, rich berry fruit, featuring a bit of ripe cherry as well. The wine is full bodied and very long, and really is a great bottle of classic Bordeaux from a stellar vintage. It doesn’t get a lot better than this.
Price Point – likely $90-$100 based on wine-searcher.com. Back in the day as a future it was $45. This was a great buy back then.
Would We Buy It? – at the price we paid back in 2007 we would buy a case. At today’s price it still represents a very excellent bottle of wine, from one of the greatest regions and one of the greatest vintages. For a special occasion this is a good choice.
We’ve still got a few cases of assorted 2005 Bordeaux to cherish over the next decade or two. We’ll report on them as they are opened, and it will be fun indeed.
A votre santé!
I read this posting also which is really very informative
