We have long been fans of the wines of Chile. Concha y Toro is one of the most well known producers around the world when you are talking about Chilean Wine, and their Marques de Casa Concha line of wines is known for consistent quality and value. Here we have the opportunity to review the most recent vintage of the Chardonnay from that line. Let’s see what we found.x
2016 Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay
The grapes here are from the Quebrada Seca vineyard, in the Limari Valley, located just 29 kilometers from the ocean. Cool ocean breezes moderate the temperatures, and the grapes ripen slowly. In the winery these were whole cluster pressed, and then fermented in oak vats. Only 5% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, so the aim here was to preserve freshness. After fermentation the wine spent 12 months in French oak barrels to round it out. Our thoughts:
The color here is a pale yellow, and the nose is bright, with melon, lemon and even a slight hint of anise. There is also noticeable minerality. The palate brings fresh fruit, with the lemon lingering at the back and crisp acid keeping it all balanced. This has an amazingly long finish, which stays clean throughout. All in all this is a top notch Chardonnay. Even Cheri, who is not a big Chardonnay person, really liked this wine. We think it is special, and a great value at it’s suggested retail of $22.
Once again the Marquesa de Casa Concha line delivers a great value, solid wine. We highly recommend this Chardonnay.
