We did a review of a Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, produced by Nine Walks and not too impressive. You don’t want to leave things on a bad note if you can avoid it, so we popped open another one to see if we could improve things a bit. We did improve, and this wine was pretty good. It still had those green notes that New Zealand is known for, but it was more refreshing, balanced and fruity as well. Here it is:
Wine: 2012 Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc
Winery Location: Marlborough, New Zealand
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: March 2014
Tasting Notes: – very light in color this also had some greenish tinges to it. It certainly doesn’t hold back, as the aromas jumped out of the glass. There were really nice tropical fruits, and those grassy notes. Cheri thought it was more than just grassy and thought it smelled like a salad. I don’t agree, and thought the fruit came through nicely and the overall effect was pleasant. On the palate it was bright, with good fruit, a nice balanced acid ridge and a clean finish. This is very good, and much better than the Nine Walks.
Price Point – $12
Would We Buy It? – we might. I thought this was very good. There are many choices in the $12 range, and this wasn’t outrageously good, so we’re not running to the store to buy more. It is a quality Sauvignon Blanc though, and I would definitely buy wine from Saint Clair again. I think I still prefer all the Casey Flat Sauvignon Blancs, although they are a bit more expensive.
A good wine, a worth a try. You might prefer this style.
A votre sante.
