Paso Robles in California is known for big reds, as well as other styles. The climate here promotes long hang time, high sugar and frequently high alcohol. Taming that into a wine that is still balanced and fruit forward is a challenge, but here is a wine that succeeds wonderfully.
Wine: 2021 J. Lohr Pure Paso Proprietary Red Blend
Winery Location: J. Lohr makes wine in Paso Robles, Monterey and Napa. This is from Paso.
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: March 2024
Tasting Notes: this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. The color is a dark ruby. Blackberry and black plum come through on the nose, with savory notes and vanilla. It’s a big nose, full of ripe fruit. On the palate this is full bodied, rich with resplendent fruit, brisk tannins and good balance for a big wine at 15% alcohol. The finish is quite long.
Price Point – ~$25
Would We Buy It? – oh yes. We enjoyed this thoroughly. It’s a big red lover’s style all the way.
This wine has depth, richness, balance and top quality, well worth the $25 price tag. We recommend it.
