We’ve been so busy with other things that the reviews of wines we tried over the last eight months have been building up. Here are two of them, both whites. One is from Campania, Italy, and the other a Napa Valley offering. Our notes follow:
Wine: 2010 Fiano di Avellino by Azienda Agraria San Paolo
Winery Location: Campania, Italy
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: July 2014
Tasting Notes: – from the Fiano di Avellino DOCG, this is golden straw in color, and presents a complex nose of rich, layered fruit and floral notes. On the palate it is rich, with a striking minerality. The finish is quite long. It is different, and excellent. There are a lot of choices out there, and if you like white wines you should probably try some more out of the ordinary varieties. They can be really good, and good values.
Price Point – $15, might be able to find it a dollar or two less.
Would We Buy It? – yes, it was delicious, and different.

Wine: 2012 Markham Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Winery Location: Napa, CA
Tasted By: Neil Date: July 2014
Tasting Notes: – very pale straw colored, this wine is clean with stone fruit aromas (think peach and pear). There are some floral notes as well. The palate is pleasing with a nice acidity. It’s an all around good wine, but not really memorable in any way. For an everyday kind of wine it’s fine.
Price Point – $13
Would We Buy It? – probably not again, although we will try other vintages as they are released. It’s not a bad wine, it’s just rather forgettable.
So two whites are presented here for your consideration. We really liked the Fiano, and it is worth asking for. Other whites from Campania include Falanghina and Greco di Tufo. All can be excellent, and represent something probably a little different than you’re used to. Variety is a good thing.
A votre sante!
