Here’s a wine from a tried and true producer, Castello Banfi. They can generally be trusted to provide a good value and a quality wine no matter which Banfi bottle you open. This one is a Chianti from their Tuscan line, and let’s see how it holds up to the Banfi reputation.
Wine: 2019 Banfi Chianti Classico Riserva
Winery Location: Tuscany, Italy
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: Feb 2024
Tasting Notes: This is a medium red, heading towards amber at the rims and starting to show some age. The nose is full of berries, cherry, tobacco and candied orange. It is a rich and complex basket of aromas. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with stiff tannins, The cherry is more dominant. The wine does fade a bit and is a little hollow in the mid-palate. It will fill in some with air time but never completely. It is somewhat lean and rustic and would make a great pizza or pasta wine, or actually paired with a veal osso buco.
Price Point – Around $20
Would We Buy It? – Maybe not, but maybe yes for an Italian dinner to serve with the meal. It lends itself to a meal with some acidity, and the tannins will stand up to a good beef cut. It’s not the greatest wine for just sipping.
So not our favorite wine from the famed Castello Banfi. It’s not a bad wine, but we think you can do better at the price point.
A votre santé!
