We opened up a bottle of the 2015 Canard Vineyards Throwback Cabernet Sauvignon recently. It started when we received several older vintages in our club shipment from Canard in the fall, owing to the fact that it should have been 2020 wines, but those were lost to the fires of that year. So we started thinking about older bottles, and we love well aged red wine.
Then there is the fact that the 2015 Throwback was our top wine of the year in 2019, after we tried it at the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival that summer. It was, and is, a classic Napa Cabernet from the northern part of the valley. Rich, deep and delicous. Complex with a solid core of fruit. Just great. You can read about that here. So we decided it was clearly time to open another bottle, now 8+ years into its life. What did we find?
Wine: 2015 Canard Vineyards Throwback Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Calistoga, Napa Valley, California
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: January 2024
Tasting Notes: still dark purple red in the glass and vibrant, with no signs of aging. The nose still screams dark fruits, the core is still powerful, tannins integrating nicely and full bodied throughout. This is going to be great for a long time to come. Still available from Canard’s library wine list. Which you can see here.
Price Point – Now $125 as a library wine, was much less back in the day.
Would We Buy It? – If you want a special bottle this is still worth it. It hasn’t lost any of its greatness.
Some wines age wonderfully, improve with age and reward patience. This is one such wine.
A votre santé!
