Some years ago we toured the Piemonte region of northwest Italy. It was a dream trip, full of lakes and mountains, wonderful people and amazing food and wine. As part of the adventure, we spent a few nights in Alba, using it as a base to visit Barolo and Barbaresco and taste classic wines from these storied regions. In the center of the charming village of Barolo is an older winery, the only one actually in town. We loved visiting, and tasted vintage Barolos dating back into the 1960s. It was impressive to say the least, and we maintain a soft spot for wines from this producer, Borgogno.
They’ve been doing this since 1761, so tradition, experience, skill and attention to detail are engrained here. But they do make more than just wonderful Barolos. Below we’ll take a look at one of their Barbera d’Alba wines. You’ll frequently see Barberas from both Asti and Alba. We prefer the ones from Alba, which tend to be more nuanced, complex and focused. The ones from Asti can be huge and quite brawny.

Wine: 2021 Borgogno Barbera d’Alba
Winery Location: Barolo, Piemonte, Italy
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: July 2021
Tasting Notes: The color is a dark purple red towards a dusty ruby. The nose brings dark berry fruit, herbs, and some forest floor. Full bodied, the palate is rich with a solid fruit core, medium tannins and a smooth entry. It’s a balanced wine with a very long finish. This is a very enjoyable bottle of red. Solid, delicious and a good value. You can also put this down for a few years.
Price Point – $33
Would We Buy It? – yes, and we will buy more. This is a very good value and a premium Barbera.
We still look to wineries that are attached to memorable experiences from our past. This is a great example of that. While the wine stands on its own, the memory makes it just that much better. We recommend the wines from Borgogno.
