Summer is winding down, and soon goblins and ghosts, witches and monsters, and maybe a devil or two will be
wandering the streets in search of tasty treats. For this review we have something that the adults in the crowd can appreciate, and something that would be perfect for a Halloween party. We first became aware of the Casillero del Diablo line from Concha y Toro twenty years ago. The wines were insane values back then, and we would buy cases of their Carmenere for under $4 per bottle. Those days are gone, and the wines of Chile have gained international recognition (deservedly so we might add). This label still provides solid, dependable wines that represent good value. The name Casillero del Diablo translates into “The Devil’s Cellar”, which makes it even more appropriate for Halloween!
Wine: 2016 Casillero del Diablo Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Chile
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: September, 2o17
Tasting Notes: The wine is a brilliant purplish red, which deepens with time in the glass. The nose has dark fruit, with plum and black cherry. There are lots of herbal notes here, and those also strengthen with air exposure. Some smoke seemed to present as well. On the palate this was originally medium+ bodied, with good length, some tannins and balancing acid. It was a pleasing wine, which might benefit from a bit more in the mid-palate. The next day that had filled in nicely, and the wine was very herby, richer and more full bodied. I would suggest some air time to really bring out the wine. It was quite good the second day.
Price Point – SRP of $11
Would We Buy It? – yes we would. At $11 this is a very good value, and a solid wine.
The Casillero del Diablo wines are the best selling Chilean wines worldwide. This wine is certainly worth the money, and better if you let it see some airtime. I would decant for an hour before serving, and watch it deepen and become richer throughout. It is also in a really cool Halloween box. From the Devil’s Cellar to you, just in time for Halloween.
