Spain produces tons of excellent value wines. You can spend some bigger bucks if you want on a high end Priorat or Rioja, but you can just as easily find some really good wine in the $10 to $20 range. This is one of those. Hailing from the Toro region, along the Duero River, this is 100% Tinta del Toro (the local name for Tempranillo). Actually I think the more expensive Riojas are still great values as well compared to premium wines from other regions, but that is a topic for another day. Here’s the wine:

Tasting Notes: -we love a lot of Spanish wine. You can get some pretty complex juice for little money, and this is one of those examples. The wine is dark purply red out of the bottle. There’s a big nose of dark fruits, as well as complex notes of vanilla, licorice and oak with some herbaceous stuff going on. In the mouth this is full bodied, with those same dark fruits. Some mineral qualities add to the oak and licorice. It’s really quite nice. It’s also really quite long, and leaves you very satisfied. For me this drinks more like a $25 bottle, and I would not be disappointed at that price. It’s a quality wine from an area that has been making great strides.
Price Point – $14
Would We Buy It? – we did buy a few, and I think we’ll get more. This is an excellent value and jumps on the Value List. If you like Tempranillo you’ll like this. Maybe you’ve heard of Numanthia, which makes Tempranillos in Toro and has a stellar reputation. We opened one of their Toros (their lower end bottling, the Toro Termes, but still $20+) a little while ago and this compares favorably. Yummy juice. especially for the price.
