Here is an unusual white from the Swartland region of South Africa. What makes it unusual is the blend, but it does really work well. Here it is:
Wine: 2023 Reign of Terroir – “The White”
Winery Location: Swartland, South Africa
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: April 2025
Tasting Notes: This is an unusual blend of 60% Chenin Blanc, 30% Roussane and 10% Verdelho. The Chenin Blanc you expect from South Africa, where Loire Valley grapes are favorites. The Roussanne takes you to the Rhone however, and then the Verdelho to Portugal, where it is a primary grape in Madeira. The result is light greenish yellow wine. It has some texture in the mouth, is very smooth, presents white peach and apricot flavors and has a little tang at the end. I really like this, and at $15 it’s a good value.
Price Point – $15
Would We Buy It? – Yes, it’s a delicious white wine which works in warmer or cooler weather. An unusal grape blend results in a very good wine here.
This is a little different, off the beaten track and quite delicious. Worth looking for.
