Here we’ll take a look at a 2003 St. Estephe. This wine is really ready to drink, and it doesn’t feel like it’s going to hold up a lot longer. That’s been the case with a lot of 2003 Bordeaux we’ve opened over the last year or so, but not all. Some are still going strong. The vintage was very fruit forward and ready to drink early. The ones that were closed down are now starting to really shine. We had a bottle of this years ago and it was better than it is now. It is still good though.
Winery Location: St. Estephe, Bordeaux
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: February 2014
Tasting Notes: – This is deep puple and really almost black with more ruby at the rims. On the nose there are dark fruits, with currant and cherry coming through, as well as floral notes. It’s more medium bodied, with a lot of mouth feel. Dark fruit again predominates the palate, with savory notes, earthiness and some well integrated tannins that are still holding the back end but wavering a bit. It has good length, but it is not super long. Reserved and elegant this is a nice and pretty classic Bordeaux.
Price Point – We got this cheap in the day, under $20. I saw it on wine-searcher for $45 now.
Would We Buy It? – not at the $45 price tag. I would buy more at the $25 price tag, so I guess that’s it for us and the 2003 Meyney. It was good while it lasted. There are better choices from Bordeaux, and from 2003 as well, in that price range. Look for the Faugeres.
Good, but not great, and not cheap. That’s a no in our book.
A votre sante!
