We reviewed a world class Barolo from Attilio Ghisolfi a couple of months back. That was the 2016 Bricco Visette, a monumental wine and a perfect example of what top end Barolo offers. You can read more about that wine here. The wine reviewed below is from the same producer, slightly less expensive, and not quite in the same class. That’s OK though, as it still delivers and represents a good value in Barolo. Here it is:
Wine: 2016 Attilio Ghisolfi Barolo Bussia
Winery Location: Piedmont, Italy
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: May 2021
Tasting Notes – Light ruby with a pinkish hue, and a nose full of the classic tar and roses Barolo is known for. There is also some cherry fruit, along the lines of a cherry cough syrup. Add in tobacco and some earthy notes and you have a very complex nose. On the palate the fruit is bright, and the wood is very noticeable. This is more rustic than it’s sister wine referenced above, and needs some time to mellow out a bit. It is a powerful wine at 15% alcohol, and is still an excellent bottle of Barolo.
Price Point – SRP of $69.99
Would We Buy It? – yes, it is a young Barolo but should round into shape nicely over the next few years. It is not in the same class as the Bricco Visette, but it is also less expensive.
This is another excellent bottle of Barolo. Attilio Ghisolfi is clearly a producer to look for.
