Beautiful and Precise German Pinot Noir

After reviewing an excellent German Rosé of Pinot Noir in our last review, we’ll stay in Germany for this wine as well.  From the Ahr, a region which was devastated in the flooding earlier this year, comes a precise Pinot Noir, with a leaner profile and restrained fruit.  Here it is:

Chateau Belrose 2016Wine:   2018 Meyer-Näkel Pinot Noir – Ahr

Winery Location:   Ahr Region, Germany

Tasted By:  Neil & Cheri                    Date:    October, 2021

Tasting Notes: this is a medium ruby color tending toward garnet.  It carries a restrained nose, with black cherry fruit and minerality.  Medium bodied on the palate, the wine shows predominantly cherry flavors in a lean profile.  This is focused.  It is also very long, beautifully balanced with refreshing acid and finishes clean.  At first it was a little lean for our tastes, but with every sip we liked it more and more.  13.5% alcohol.

Price Point –  $45

Would We Buy It?    yes, we would.  As mentioned above, this got better with every sip we took.  I really liked it.  This is not for those who want rich, fuller bodied Pinot.  It is for anyone who likes balanced wines with a sense of terroir, and which will go well with a wide variety of food.  We enjoyed just sipping it.

This wine is pretty typical of German Pinot Noir, which tend to be more focused and leaner in profile.  It is delicious.

A votre santé!
