Let’s take a look at a small batch Cabernet Sauvignon from the heart of Napa Valley that delivers on all fronts. Most people are familiar with the big names from the valley, but there are dozens of smaller producers making great wine. Some sell all of their production through on site sales and direct mail. We grabbed some of this at a significant discount, and it was a steal as the wine justifies its much higher release price. Here it is:
Wine: 2017 Sola Provus Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Napa Valley, California – Oakville AVA
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: June 2022
Tasting Notes: Dark ruby in color, this wine has huge legs in the glass and a rich, complex nose. Currant, mint, anise, vanilla, tobacco, caramel and cedar are all in play. It is full bodied and rich. On the palate you get red berry and cherry, along with some herbs. The balance is excellent, and medium+ tannins frame the wine nicely. The tannins linger. Fleshy and rich with a great mid-palate, the finish is really long. It is a very pretty wine, with substance and complexity, and is a great small batch Napa Cabernet.
Price Point – The winery price is $110, and you can see that in the quality. We stole this wine on sale under $40, which is simply great. If you search and find it there, buy some.
Would We Buy It? – yes we would. We don’t generally go past the $100 mark on a bottle, or really even close to it. This is $100 quality though. It is extremely good, and worth a splurge if you’re looking for something special.
There are so many smaller producers in Napa and Sonoma. It’s well worth the effort to seek some out and try their wines. This is a perfect example.
