The reds from Paso Robles, from the central coast of California, are not exactly known for being shy. They can make big red wine here, showcasing rich fruit and lots of body. That’s not to say that everyting is that way, as Paso has a lot to offer for a wine lover. There are over 200 wineries in the area, producing a wide range of wine styles and varietals. It’s become a rather hot spot for wine tourism, especially for those looking for something a little more relaxing and low key compared to the frenzy you will run into at the top Napa wineries.
Let’s take a look at a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Treana brand of Hope Family Wines. I remember my first interaction with Austin Hope’s wines, years ago at a wine event in Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort. I was really impressed, and it was the Treana that I thought stole the show. So this is a bit of a blast from the past. Here’s the wine:
Wine: 2021 Treana Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Paso Robles, California
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: Nov 2023
Tasting Notes: It’s a very dark, purple red in color. The nose is full of very ripe fruit, almot overly extracted but not quite. There are blackberries, tobacco, spice, toasted/charred wood and some savory elements. It’s really big and rich on the nose. The palate is more balanced, and it has some freshness you wouldn’t necessarily expect after that huge nose of really ripe frit. It’s actually quite nicely balanced, complex, long and a very good example of fully extracted Cabernet. If you like big red wines you will like this.
Price Point – about $25
Would We Buy It? – Yes, although the fruit is a bit riper than I would like. The wine does stay balanced and is quite good overall. It is fairly priced, and ideal for those who like big, opulent reds.
Hope Famly Wines continues to garner awards and accolades year after year. We need to get reacquainted with there current offerings.
