We have a few wines we tried near the end of the year which still need a review, and some will be on our Top 25 list from 2021 that will be out soon. This wine falls into both of those categories. When you find an excellent Napa Cabernet for under $40 it is a good thing. We got a crazy sale price on the wine below, but it is still less than $40 at market price. Let’s take a look.
Wine: 2018 Chateau Buena Vista Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Sonoma County CA
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: December 2021
Tasting Notes: This wine is made with grapes from across Napa, including vineyards in St. Helena, Oak Knoll and the eastern hills. It is a blend, with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot added to create a sort of Left Bank Bordeaux style. The result is pretty great. Dark ruby in color, the juice sports a nose of blackberry, black plum and some herbal notes. On the palate it is full bodied, but just so. Still, it is rich, with dark berry flavors. Tannins are very integrated and this is smooth and drinking well. Everything is integrated and in balance here. Overall it is just a well made and delicious wine.
Price Point – we paid $25, which was a steal. You can find this for around $35, which is still a great value point.
Would We Buy It? – we did, and would again. I think this is really delicious and a great example of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon for the price.
While the wine reviewed here is from their Chateau Buena Vista collection, Buena Vista Winery makes many more wines, including a super premium Founder’s Collection. Steeped in history, the winery goes back to 1857 and is on one of the original pioneers of the Napa and Sonoma wine industry. We’re looking forward to trying many more of their wines.
