Famiglia Pasqua makes wine in the Veneto, in a family business dating back to 1925. The current proprietors, brothers Riccardo and Alessandro Pasqua, have introduced a more whimsical, creative approach. This involves sometimes breaking some well established winemaking rules in the area. The results are some pretty amazing wines, and we’ve reviewed several of them in the past. It seems to be working, as their wines are now available in over 50 countries worldwide.
Here, we’ll discuss one of their current white wine releases, made from 100% Garganega but not what you would usually expect. From 100% Garganega you would normally expect a Soave. This wine, however, is not traditional by any means. It is a white made with the appassimento technique, where the grapes are left to dry on trays for a short time, which increases their concentration. It is the process used to make your favorite Amarone. (The Pasqua’s, by the way, do also make an excellent Amarone) After fermenting in steel tanks this wine also sees some oak. Here are the details:
Wine: 2017 Famiglia Pasqua Romeo & Juliet Passione Sentimento
Winery Location: Veneto, Italy
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: January 2019
Tasting Notes: light straw in color, this wine shows a rich nose of citrus, backcurrant bud, some vanilla bean and a little coffee cream. This is surprising, and complex. On the palate you get body, and texture, as well as a beautiful balance with refreshing acid. There is even some tannin here, no doubt pulled out of the time in barrel. It is long, clean and delicious. Clearly a superior white wine.
Price Point – $16
Would We Buy It? – We would. This is very, very good indeed and a good value.
If you like complex white wines with complexity and character, this is one to try.
