Wine: 2019 Schloss Vollrads Estate Riesling
Winery Location: Rheingau, Germany
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: October 2021
Tasting Notes: The Rheingau is probably the most famous wine producing area in Germany. Although it only accounts for about 2% of the country’s production, it has the benefit of the best vineyard location on the Rhine River. Here the Rhine turns and runs east to west, which gives the northern shore’s hillsides a southern exposure, as well as the benefit of the sunlight reflecting off of the river. It’s a sunny and warm microclimate, unfortunately one that is only about 15 miles long. Still – they make the best of it.
This wine is from the oldest wine selling area in the world, and they started officially selling wine in 1211. The juice in this bottle is very light straw in color, with a classic German Riesling nose. Ripe apple, lemon and that unmistakable petrol marker flood out of the glass, along with some floral notes and a nice mineral streak. Those all carry to the palate, where the wine is off dry to almost semi-sweet. The sugar is perfectly balanced by the acidity, and this will go very well with a lot of foods, including spicy dishes. Delicious.
