Over the Christmas holiday we found ourselves in Morrisville, NC, visiting family. One of our forays out for food brought us to Saffron, in a strip mall near a Harris Teeter supermarket. The setting screamed strip mall food, and the inside really didn’t scream anything differently, but the proof is what’s on the plate. The restaurant has high ceilings and not a lot of ambiance. There is a decently stocked bar, but nothing great. Apparently there is a lunch buffet on weekends, but we were there on a weekday, so we ordered off the menu.
Based on the listed prices I wasn’t expecting much, but when the food arrived that expectation was instantly dashed. I ordered the chicken biryani, and it came beautifully wrapped inside its bread blanket, like a big, overstuffed pot pie. When I broke into it a wonderful aroma flew out, and it was packed with chicken and rice, full of flavor, and accompanied with a yogurt sauce
to help cut the heat. I had ordered a 3 out of 5 for heat, and that seemed about right. This actually seemed a bit hotter than a 3, but the yogurt worked perfectly and the flavor was outstanding. There was also enough for at least two people, minimum. Around the table others murmured their satisfaction as well. Several Vegetable
Samosa appetizers were consumed, as well as some Chana Masala and Pepper Chicken. The combo meals came with a big plate of salad, rice and the vegetable of the day, which I originally thought were the whole meals! Nan completed a very satisfying lunch.
Service here was a bit slow, and the food takes a little while even when they are not busy. On a busy day, or night, I imagine it could get quite slow. The food was great though, and the total bill for the six of us, including drinks, was ridiculously low. What a great value this was.
Our wallet is out for Saffron when we are in Morrisville. I will definitely be going back for lunch next time we visit.
