With Christmas up next week, here is a really good Cabernet for a very reasonable price. This will hold up to whatever type of holiday gathering you are planning in this upside down year. Buy a case and share! It’s from a dependable, go to winemaker and producer who pushes the boundaries a bit, but always delivers. There must be something to this, as he has been named winemaker of the year twice, once by Food & Wine magazine and then again by Wine Enthusiast. Actually it’s three times if you throw in a similar accolade from Seattle Magazine. That’s some pretty heady stuff, but unlikely to affect this down to earth winemaker.
Wine: 2018 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Columbia Valley, Washington
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: December 2020
Tasting Notes: This is a dark ruby in color, with a nose full of dark berries, vanilla, caramel and herbal notes. As it opens the fruit becomes very much the main act. On the palate this juice really shines, with rich blackberry fruit. It is just full bodied, well balanced and very long. This is indeed a wine of substance.
Price Point – $15-$17
Would We Buy It? – we did, and really enjoyed several bottles. We will be buying more. At the purchase price of $15 this is an absolute steal and really drinks well above that price point. Highly recommended, and a case buy candidate.
Made by Charles Smith, in case you haven’t guessed, this is a wonderful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. You wouldn’t be upset if you paid twice as much. We suggest you try a bottle or twelve.
A votre santé!
