Need we say it again? Almost nothing offers better values than Bordeaux in great vintages, especially when you look to the lesser known, or at least lesser heralded areas. Here is a wine we bought from the 2010 vintage, so it is not a young pup at the age of seven. It is from Fronsac, on the Right Bank, and as such should be mainly comprised of Merlot, which it is. This producer is always on the list of good value wines, and we have bought their juice before, including the 2005 and 2009 vintages. Let’s take a closer look.
Winery Location: Bordeaux, Right Bank, Fronsac
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: June 2017
Tasting Notes: this is still a young looking wine, with a dark purplish red color and no dulling at the rim whatsoever. The nose is big and full of berry fruit, some oak and spice. On the palate the wine is full bodied and just resplendent with berries. You do get the oak and a little spice as well. Tannins are quite firm still but very approachable. A nice balance and some acid keep it fresh. This stays full throughout, and finishes long. Excellent wine. Excellent Bordeaux. The blend is 83% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Price Point – It was under $20 as a future. It is still available in the mid-$20s.
Would We Buy It? – we did already, obviously, but based on the bottle we just sampled this is very much worth its current price point. If you’re looking for a really good bottle of Bordeaux that won’t break the bank see if you can find this.
So far the 2009 and 2010 vintages are holding beautifully. As is 2005 of course. We’re looking forward to many years of enjoyment.
A votre santé!
