While Zinfandel is not our favorite varietal, it is really a tale of two cities. Your average Zin is very fruity, but many lack the depth and complexity we really look for in a good red wine. Of course sometimes you just want a nice, fruity, pleasant glass of red wine, and then they’re perfect. Old vine Zins tend to be different. The old, gnarly vines tend to produce less fruit, but more concentrated juice. Here we have an old vine Zinfandel that appears to have benefited from those elements.
Wine: 2017 XYZIN Old Vine Zinfandel
Winery Location: California – grapes from Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Solano and Lodi
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: December 2020
Tasting Notes: This is a dark ruby red in color. The nose has plum, dark berries, cherry, tobacco, menthol and vanilla. Did we say something earlier about old vines and complexity? On the palate it is rich, with ripe plum fruit and herbs. Some oak is present as well. It finishes very long and is really quite good. Made from 80% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah and 10% Syrah. You definitely get that boost of depth and richness from the Petite Sirah, and it works beautifully with the Zin. Some of the vines here are up to 100 years old.
Price Point – $14.99
Would We Buy It? – This is a great value at this price. We would absolutely buy this.
This is a lot of wine for $15. Highly recommended.
