Amarone is a wine any fan of big reds should be familiar with. Crafted with dried grapes using the appassimento method, which provide concentration and richness, this wine is primarily made from Corvina, generally with the addition of other grapes such as Rondinella, Corvinone and Molinara. It can range from a racy, pure fruit driven wine to a layered collection of very ripe fruit, with raisiny notes. We tend to prefer the versions that stay away from the dried raisin quality, and this wine fits that mold. Here it is.
Wine: 2015 Corte Majoli Amarone della Valpolicella
Winery Location: Veneto, Italy
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: June 2019
Tasting Notes: With a dark, cherry red color, this wine presents aromas of cherry, blackberry, leather and dried herbs. It is very complex. On the palate the wine is rich and focused, full bodied and balanced. The tannins are firm but well integrated. As you sip this, and savor it, it just grows on you. Seamless and delicious, it’s hard to find anything wrong. This is really good wine.
Price Point – $30-$35
Would We Buy It? – we did buy a bottle, and think it is a good value in this price range. It’s not the richest Amarone, or the biggest. You can find an Amarone with more tannin, and more acid. You’ll be hard pressed to find one that just fits together better than this does. We would buy this again.
We’ve had some incredible Amarones at various price points, and this one delivers for under $35. If you see it we suggest grabbing a bottle.
