Let’s talk about two red wines we tasted recently, one from Washington State and one from Australia. Both provide serious value for the price.
Wine: 2015 Gordon Estate Syrah
Winery Location: Columbia Valley, WA
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: December 2020
Tasting Notes: The wine is a dark purple red in color. The nose brings waves of fruit, accented by herbs and floral notes. This is full bodied with medium tannin and good acid. You get more fruit on the palate, with some red plum mixing in, along with a nice orange element in the middle. It is very long, finishing with a vanilla flavor that wraps up a satisfying wine drinking experience.
Price Point – around $20
Would We Buy It? – yes, and we did. We loved this wine, as did our son Alex, who knows his wines and is a big Syrah fan. This is a solid value.
And now the second wine:
Wine: Penley Estate Tolmer Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Location: Coonawarra, South Australia
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: December 2020
Tasting Notes: Medium ruby in color, with red berry fruit on the nose. This juice has medium tannin, good acid and balance and is just full bodied. It sports 14% alcohol, so it isn’t huge, and actually is a great food wine. It stays fresh throughout. This is another wine we really like, especially at its price point.
Price Point – $20
Would We Buy It? – another one that we did buy, and are very glad of it. We might buy more.
You might not still be able to find the 2015 Gordon Syrah, but the 2016 is out there. The Penley Estate Tolmer Cab is still available, and worth the search.
