We’ve written articles in the past which focused on wine’s ability to change over time and with exposure to oxygen. You can read about one of those by clicking here. It can be quite dramatic with some wines, as they change their character, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. In this case we think it is for the better. Here’s the wine:
Wine: 2020 Pascual Toso Estate Malbec
Winery Location: Mendoza, Argentina
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: June 2021
Tasting Notes: The wine was a dark, ruby red in the glass. The nose was all about very ripe fruit, including plum and some berries, maybe some fig, and definitely some oaky notes. The tannins were quite brisk. Overall I would call the wine quite jammy. There was some red licorice. It lacked a bit in complexity and structure right after opening. The ripe fruit was in your face and a bit rustic. So we let it sit overnight after pumping the bottle.
The second day the wine had elevated and integrated. It was richer but not in a super ripe way, just with concentrated fruit that was focused. It was not as jammy, and had a noticeably more refined profile. This is clearly a case of a wine improving with some oxidation. We would recommend opening this and decanting for an hour.
We also reviewed the entire line of Pascual Toso wines several years back, tasting with the winemaker, Felipe Stahlschmidt. You can read about that here. Pascual Toso and Felipe make some seriously good wine.
Price Point – $13.99 MSRP
Would We Buy It? – Yes. We liked it very much after it had a chance to integrate. This is definitely a wine to decant.
A votre santé!
