Good California Merlot for $10

We really haven’t been tasting the Robert Mondavi Private Selection label wines the past few years.  I think that is due to some less than stellar experiences a while back.  We should have known better, because as we always say – wine is a constantly changing thing.  It varies vintage to vintage, vineyard to vineyard, and producer to producer.  This is around a $10 bottle, maybe less, so you aren’t expecting Chateau Petrus here.  Still, you want a good bottle for your money, and this is one.  Let’s take a closer look.

mondavi private selection merlotWine:  2017 Robert Mondavi Private Selection California Merlot

Winery Location:   majority of grapes from Monterey county

Tasted By:  Neil & Cheri             Date:   May 2019

Tasting Notes:  we haven’t been a huge fan of this label in the past, but we tried a bottle to see how things were going.  This is dark purple red, opaque, and has a big nose of black plum with leather, oak and savory notes.  The palate is rich, the wine is full bodied, and the dark fruit is framed by smooth tannins.  It finishes long.  There is nothing at all to complain about here, especially at the price.  This is pretty good juice.

Price Point –    $10, maybe a bit less

Would We Buy It?   we did and we would again.  This is an excellent $10 bottle of wine.

Here we have a clear example of how you can’t give up on a certain wine due to a bad experience.  The wine is going to be different the next vintage, and you might just change your mind.  We certainly did with this.

A votre santé!
