With Thanksgiving right around the corner, and Christmas soon to follow, let’s list some of the value wines we’ve encountered recently that would make good choices this holiday season. A lot of these are a bit out of the ordinary. None of these are super expensive however, topping out at around $40, and most are far less. You can see them all on the Value List, and you can read the notes on them by clicking the wine.
Whites:
– 2013 Castello D’ALBA Douro White (under $10, clean, crisp and excellent)
– 2012 Avia Sauvignon Blanc ($5.99 and ridiculously good for the money)
– 2013 Via Latina Alvarinho (very good and inexpensive. Structure belies it’s price)
– 2013 Felines Jourdan Picpoul De Pinet – (unusual and excellent white – about $10 – $12)
– 2012 Recuerdo Torrontes – (absolute steal at $12)
– 2012 Colliano Cuvée White – (Slovenian value here at $16)
– 2012 Domaine de Vaufuget Vouvray – ($12, off dry and very nice white. An easy drinker for sure.)
Reds:
– 2007 Diamond Hill Vineyards Pinot Noir (local RI Pinot in the Burgundian style)
– 2006 Monte da Pestana Tinto (about $14 and very good. Long and elegant)
– 2011 Colliano Cuvee Red – (more great value from Slovenia, also $16)
– 2010 Simonsig Redhill Pinotage (around $30 and absolutely fabulous, rich red)
– 2010 Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva – (GREAT Chianti – and we don’t often say that- about $30)
– 2011 WALT Anderson Valley Pinot Noir – (can’t miss classic California Pinot – $40)
– 2010 Casey Flat Ranch Open Range Red (as well as the Estate Red from the same vintage)
Sparklers and Others:
– Diamond Hill Cranberry Apple Wine (this just screams Thanksgiving and Christmas – we always have some)
– 2013 Albino Rocca Moscato D’Asti (about $16, simply delightful, light sparkler from Piedmont)
– 2012 Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rose (~ $22, classic method pink sparkling wine from South Africa)
– 2012 Villa Jolanda Brachetto d’Acqui (inexpensive, red, tasty and fun, about $10)
So grab a bottle or two or three and celebrate the season. You don’t have to spend a lot. Of course, if you are opening a bottle of Romanee-Conti, by all means invite me.
A votre sante!
