Sunday, April 17th is Malbec World Day. It was started over a decade ago by Wines of Argentina to commemorate what is easily the most important grape to the Argentine wine industry. Malbec vineyards there comprise 70% of the total Malbec grown in the world. It was imported from Europe and it has thrived, to say the least. You can still find it grown in France and other places, and it is bottled on its own in Cahors as it has been for centuries, but nowhere does it reach the heights it does in Argentina.
Many wine drinkers do not consider Malbec to stand in the pantheon of the world’s great red wine grapes. They are wrong, and clearly are not drinking the right Malbecs. We’ve reviewed many great ones, and here are links to some of those, impressive Malbecs from Catena and some equally impressive versions from Bianchi.
So, if you are inclined, join in the worldwide celebration of Malbec. There is much to be discovered.
A votre santé!
