The Central Otago region of New Zealand, on the South Island, has developed quite a name for itself when it comes to Pinot Noir. Here we have a bottle to judge for ourselves, and let’s see if this lives up to the hype. This one got lost for a while in the back of the fridge, and is actually not the latest vintage of this wine you can buy, but it should give us a good idea of what to expect across the board from this producer.
Wine: 2018 Mud House Pinot Noir
Winery Location: Central Otago Region, New Zealand
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: May 2019
Tasting Notes: this juice is medium red in color. The nose is quite complex, with dark berries, cherry liqour, oak, some earth and a little menthol. You get the fruit on the palate, which is also smooth, long and quite rich. There’s a touch of orange at the back. Tannins are super fine and integrated. This is a pleasure to drink.
Price Point – $19.99
Would We Buy It? – sure would. As Pinot Noir under $20 goes, this is really good. The depth of flavor and complexity speak to a higher price point. We’ll be looking to try the 2019 and confirm the quality carries over.
