Malbec is a somewhat misunderstood wine grape. It is very popular, and most people would say they have tried it. Many more serious wine lovers might not list it among their favorites, however. The average Malbec on the market might have good fruit, and is likely a good wine, but some can finish with a little earth/dirt taste. Some can be a bit bitter. It is not a wine grape most associate with “great” wines. This is unfortunate, as it certainly does make great wines.
Here we’ll review a wine that will make you think about Malbec as a superior wine.
Wine: 2017 Bodegas Bianchi Particular Malbec
Winery Location: Mendoza, Argentina
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: October 2020
Tasting Notes: The color is very dark, purple red. The nose has black plum, toasted oak, creamy mocha, vanilla. This is quite complex. On the palate you get the dark fruit, with some smoke. It full bodied, integrated and rich. It is also balanced with nice acidity. Medium tannins frame everything nicely. This is a significant wine, with great structure and a long, long finish. It is a superior Malbec, and will help you appreciate this grape and its potential.
Price Point – $39.99 SRP
Would We Buy It? – We would. This is a great bottle of wine, worth the price, and is going on our Value List.
Great Malbec is definitely a thing. We’ve had some that were simply spectacular, and worthy of a place among the great wines of the world. You can spend a lot more on top end Malbec, but this wine lets you take a peak into its top end world, but at a more reasonable price.
