I’ll be off to the Brda region of Slovenia soon to tour the vineyards and the local wine cooperative, as well as sample lots of their wines. Who knows, might even get a bit of sight seeing in as well. Just over the northeastern Italian border, the Brda region is comprised of rolling hills with the mountains looming to the north. There will be some local grape varieties and some of the classics. All in all it should be quite a trip.
Slovenia gained it’s independence from Yugoslavia in 1992, and is now a democratic country and a member of NATO, as well as the European Union. The people are know to be hardworking, the land green and beautiful, and they have been making wine here for a very long time. This will be our first exposure to the vineyards and wine cellars (or vinska kleti) of one of their three main wine producing regions.
Many blogs will be coming as we chronicle the area, the people, the vineyards and the wine. One thing is for certain, there will be a lot of surprises.
If you’re going to Newport later this month you can sample some of the wines from the Goriska Brda cooperative. Definitely try and stop by their table.
A votre sante!
