Some things change, some things don’t. One thing which doesn’t is the fact that Riesling offers some of the best values in white wine available. This is a very good thing. You can always find quality, refreshing, value driven Rieslings under $20, sometimes under $10. The grape also provides the winemaker with a broad canvas, and Rieslings can be simple or complex, dry or sweet, crisp and clean or deeper and bold. In fact, if I could only drink one white varietal for the rest of my life, it would be Riesling.
Here’s a good example of the clean and refreshing kind, just off dry and packed with fruit.
Wine: Nik Weis Selection – 2017 Urban Riesling
Winery Location: Mosel Valley, Germany
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: May 2018
Tasting Notes: Very clean, with pear and apple aromas. On the palate the wine is off dry, with bright fruit. When it opens a bit you get some white flowers as well. This has good texture, stays focused throughout and finishes long. There is just a tiny bit of petrol lurking in the background, but the telltale sign of German Riesling is really subdued. Nicely done, well made and an excellent value.
Price Point – $15
Would We Buy It? – Yes we would. This is a quality Riesling at $15, maybe a bit lower in your local store.
Apparently the Urban Riesling is named after Saint Urban of Langres, the patron saint of vineyard workers and winemakers. This wine is very good indeed, and Saint Urban is obviously taking good care of his flock in the Mosel Valley.
