Domaine de Bila-Haut was purchased by Michel Chapoutier in 1999. The property, located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, traces wine making roots back to the ancient Greek mariners. The House of Bila, which is the translation of the name of the estate, was once a house of refuge for the Knights Templar. So this place is steeped in history, and a tradition of viticulture. Located very near the Spanish border, this area is considered a source for top quality wines. Let’s see if that holds here:

Tasting Notes: We have reviewed other wines in the Domaine de Bila-Haut portfolio in the past, and have found them to be solid values. This wine is a premium wine for the producer, and we were expecting great things. Unfortunately there was some clear leakage from the bottle when it arrived, as you can see in the picture. Everything worked out fine, however, as the wine was not spoiled in the least. Dark reddish purple, the wine has meaty and savory notes on the nose, along with black plum and spice. This is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, very typical for the region. Made from 40+ year old vines, it is full bodied and rich on the palate, with brisk tannins and a long, satisfying finish. In short, this is quite excellent indeed. You could certainly convince yourself you were drinking a good quality, southern Rhone wine. It has a bit of a rustic quality to it, but in a very pleasing way.
