Let’s travel to the heel of the Italian boot to find a rich, full bodied red from a non-traditional grape, and one which won’t break the bank. From the Puglia region (or Apulia in Italian), this wine is completely treated in stainless steel, with no oak. The depth is surprising.
This is another of the wines we recently tasted at Crush Fine Wines in New Bedford, MA. Here it is:
Wine: 2013 Tenute Rubino Oltremé
Winery Location: Brindisi, Puglia, Italy
Tasted By: Neil and Cheri Date: June 2016
Tasting Notes: very dark red, the wine has a nose of red and black fruit. There’s some plum in there, and some cherry. There are also some complex notes which transfer to the palate. We were impressed with the depth and richness of the wine, which maintains itself through the long finish. This drinks like a more expensive bottle. The grape here is Susumaniello, a traditional, regional grape you don’t run across every day.
Price Point – around $16
Would We Buy It? – we did, and we will again. This is delicious red wine at a very good price point. Try something a bit different.
There are so many grapes to experience, and so many wineries doing good things with them. This is going to be an endless journey, but that’s OK.
