Rioja is generally a great value wine. It tends to over deliver at all price points. You can find excellent Crianzas under $15, Reservas under $20 and Grand Reservas under $30. Even the younger Joven wines can be excellent as well. Here, we’ll tell you about a wine that sells for $7 or so, and is actually a good representation of a Rioja. Really, it’s suggested retail is $7. Here it is.
Wine: 2015 Kirkland Signature Reserva
Winery Location: Rioja, Spain
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: June 2020
Tasting Notes: this wine is made from 100% Tempranillo, and is a bright ruby in color, with a pretty complex nose. There is tart cherry and spice evident. On the palate it is medium bodied, with medium tannins. The fruit tends toward a red berry cough drop, but not overly ripe. It is pretty smooth and finishes long. Aged in 50% American and 50% French oak for 30 months. This wine is really an insane value.
Price Point – $6.99 suggested retail
Would We Buy It? – absolutely. Talk about a great house wine for the price. We still can’t believe this retails for $7.
This wine is definitely worth a case buy. It is not your usual $7 mediocrity.
A votre santé!
