Here at Red Wine Please! we’re always on the lookout for spectacular wine values. Every year we find some early on, and they impress so much they get an entry into what will eventually be our Top 25 Wines of the Year list. There’s always a chance they get bumped out by a stellar group of wines along the way, but in this case I don’t think so. Below is a juicy, focused and delicious red blend from Spain that had an initial retail of $85. That’s not unrealistic, as it is pretty excellent juice. We didn’t pay anywhere near that, and maybe you can grab some on the cheap as well. Here it is.
Wine: 2016 Ego Bodegas “Goru 18M”
Winery Location: Jumilla, Spain

Tasting Notes: this is a blend of Monastrell (70%), Syrah (20%) and Petit Verdot (10%) While it is already five years old, the color is vibrant, a dark purplish red. The nose is big and inviting. There is currant and blackberry, and a little cherry too. Oak notes and orange peel add to the complexity. If you keep at it you’ll pull lots more out of it. This is complex. It’s also quite tannic, but very approachable now. Brisk acid keeps the balance and allows the beautiful fruit core to flow throughout the experience. Not quite full bodied initially, but after a day in the bottle it got there. Either way is perfectly fine, as this is one focused, balanced, vibrant and gorgeous wine. It’s got the balanced edge of a good Sagrantino, but not quite the bracing acid. This is very, very good.
Price Point – originally $85, and while that would be expensive this is probably worth it, or at least close to that. We however paid under $30. After buying a few bottles we were so impressed that we ordered another case. By the case it is $24.95, and that my friends is insane for a wine of this quality.
Would We Buy It? – we did, twice. This is a case buy for sure.
