Just a follow up on the Wine Spectator Top 100 issue. As wrote in the last post, the number one wine is tough to get and frequently goes up drastically in price. You generally are never going to be able to buy it for what they list as the release price.
So I spent a few minutes on wine-searcher and got the following results:
#1 – Shafer Relentless 2008 – listed at $60 – currently on wine-searcher $299!
#2 – Chateau de St-Cosme Gigondas 2010 – listed at $41 – currently on wine-searcher – $40 (right on release price – not bad at all)
#3 – Two Hand’s Siraz – Bella’s Garden, 2010 – listed at $69 – currently on wine-searcher – $55-$60 (again not bad at all – under release price)
#4 – Clos de Papes Chateaunuef du Pape 2010 – listed at $128 – currently on wine-searcher – $120 – (again below release).
#5 – Chateau Guiraud Sauternes 2009 – listed at $60 – currently on wine-searcher – as low as $53 (again below release).
So, it seems pretty clear that the price craziness extends only to the lucky wine voted #1. That wine spikes and gets priced according to the accompanying buying hysteria. Everything else doesn’t seem overly affected. So it might be prudent to forget about the number one selection and concentrate on everything else. Otherwise you’re going to pay too much.
Disclaimer: I don’t have the PRO version of wine-searcher so I don’t see all the results, but this is representative of the trend.
A votre sante (just not with the 2008 Shafer Relentless)!
