Tasty Wines in Convenient Cans – From Ironstone Vineyards

The can craze continues unabated, and there is certainly a place for them.  It’s great to be able to reach for a quick opening can, or to pack a few in a cooler for a picnic or beach run.  Maybe you’re just hanging out on your deck?  Regardless of where you are, the convenience of the can is hard to argue.  As long as the juice inside is good, we are on board.  There is still much to be said for the tradition of pulling a cork from a bottle, but the can has its place.  Here are a few that are worth considering.  All are from Ironstone Vineyards, a producer located in Murphy’s, CA, about 60 miles east of Lodi.  They are all line priced at $6.99 per 375 ml can.

2018 Obsession Symphony – the Symphony grape is a hybrid, made from Muscat of Alexandria and Grenache Gris.  Here, it is Obsession Can - Symphonymixed with 10% Orange Muscat and 5% Viognier, so you would expect a fragrant wine, with ripe fruit flavors.  It is fragrant indeed, but not floral.  The nose has pear, peach and tropical fruits, as well as Asian spices.  On the palate it is slightly sweet, with lots of fruit and a slight effervescence.  Overall, it is smooth and clean and a very pleasing wine.

Obsession Can - Rose2018 Obsession Rosé – this is a mix of Pinot Grigio and White Zinfandel.  It is a light pink color, with a nose of ruby red grapefruit.  There is a little astringency at first, but that fades quickly in the glass.  Overall the palate is clean, and the wine is well balanced.  It is off dry, but just slightly.  It has good length as well.  This is a solid rosé.

2017 Obsession Red – there are five grapes in the blend here, with Merlot, Petite Sirah, Tannat, Syrah and Obsession Can - RedViognier included.  It sports a brisk 14.5% alcohol level, and is not a timid wine.  That said, it really is fruit forward, with the nose bringing raspberry, strawberry, briar and bramble.  Wood notes from the oak impart some complexity.  There is some tannin, good acid and a nice balance. This is a perfect wine when you want a fruit forward red.

All three of these show well, and are certainly worth considering.  You can also get the Symphony and Red Blend wines in standard, 750 ml bottles.

Ironstone produces many other wines, and a reserve series as well as single vineyard wines.  You can see more of those at their website: https://www.ironstonevineyards.com/.
