I had the opportunity to talk to winemaker Bob Pepi a few months ago, and to taste through a series of the wines he makes. This was great fun, and always educational. It was also a chance to try some pretty amazing wines.
One of the wines we tasted then was the 2018 Two Angels Petite Sirah, made for Steve Kreps’ label at Quintessential Wines. That wine was delicious, with dark fruits and nice, complimentary oak. You can read about that interview and the wines here.
Below we have the 2019 vintage of the Two Angels Petite Sirah. Let’s see how they compare.
Wine: 2019 Two Angels Petite Sirah
Winery Location: Grapes from Red Hills, Lake County, California
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: July 2021
Tasting Notes: The wine is a dark purple color, and the nose is black plum, blackberry, toasted oak and a touch of smoke. This is full bodied, with rich, dark fruits coating the palate. It stays rich throughout, and the fruit powers through to the finish. Tannins are medium, and the wine is really smooth. It has a long, persistent finish. Overall this is a pretty classic Petite Sirah, and very well made (as are all of Bob’s wines). You can see the image of the 2018 in this latest version, although the touch of smoke is something a bit different. They are both pretty excellent.
Price Point – SRP of $26.99
Would We Buy It? – Sure would. This is delicious and a good value. We’ll add it to our Value List.
It’s great when you just know a winemaker is always going to deliver a quality wine, and a good value. You can count on that with Bob Pepi.
We’ll have a review soon of two Cabernets from the new Atlas Peak venture, now that Quintessential Wines has the label, and Bob will be making the wine. Look for that, as something pretty special happens when Bob makes a Napa based Cabernet Sauvignon.
I guess we could say the same for Petite Sirah.
