Here’s a pretty classic bottle of Australian Shiraz, from a well known name. Shiraz (the same grape known as Syrah in most of the world) makes a big red wine. In the Rhone you would expect meaty, savory notes with spice and black plum. In Australia you can get different profiles, but it is still a significant wine that can be extraordinary. Let’s look at one here.
Wine: 2019 Henry’s Drive Shiraz
Winery Location: McLaren Vale, South Australia
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: March 2021
Tasting Notes: This is a really dark, reddish purple in color. Long legs cascade down the glass. The nose has mixed berries, spice, menthol and some of the classic savory notes. It is full bodied and rich, but also focused and fresh at the same time. Tannins are firm and persistent. The palate is full of plum and berry fruit, and that fruit also persists throughout. The finish is long and satisfying.
