These two wines come from Herdade do Esporão, in the Alentejo region of Portugal. This is an area with a long wine history, and a wine industry that is advancing itself in concert with the land, promoting sustainability and eco-friendly practices. You’ll find many wines from the region that use International varieties, along with their traditional indigenous ones. The red is an example of that, while the white is all traditional Alentejo. Here they are:
Wine: 2019 Herdade do Esporão Monte Velho White
Winery Location: Alentejo Region, Portugal
Tasted By: Neil Date: December 2020
Tasting Notes: This has a beautiful color: a rich, brilliant golden yellow. The nose is complex, with some grapefruit, apricot, honeysuckle and herbs. On the palate it has good body and texture, with a nice lemon finish. It is also quite long. This is a significant white wine, especially for the price.
Price Point – SRP $10
Would We Buy It? – Absolutely. For the price this is a great value, and a wine that will stand up to a lot of foods as well as make a pleasant sipper.
And now the red:
Wine: 2019 Herdade do Esporão Monte Velho Red
Winery Location: Alentejo Region, Portugal
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: December 2020
Tasting Notes: A medium dark color, more purple than red. The nose is fruit driven, with cherry, blackberry and some toasted oak, caramel and spice. It is just full bodied, with a fruity palate, medium to mild tannins and great acid and balance. Good length too.
Price Point – also a $10 SRP
Would We Buy It? – Yes. This is another very enjoyable wine for little money.
Both of the wines above represent good value, and in the $10 category it is hard to find something better.
A votre santé!
