We love wines from the Rhone Valley, both the north and the south. Here we journey to the southern climes of the Rhone, and the Ventoux appellation, which lies east of Chateauneuf and surrounds Gigondas and Vacqueyras to the east and south. There are many grapes grown here, but the major ones are Syrah and Grenache. This wine is 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache. It’s also big at 15.5% alcohol, not that atypical from the warm southern Rhone. The question, as always, is: is it any good? Let’s see.
Wine: 2011 Quintessence – Chateau Pesquie
Winery Location: Ventoux, Southern Rhone
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: September 2014
Tasting Notes: – this is dark, dark purple red and opaque. On the nose dark fruits, spice and savory notes dominate, although there are some floral notes filtering in as well. Huge legs on the glass give an indication of a wine with full body and mouth feel. The dark fruits carry over to the palate, with black plum and blackberry. Spice is prominent. The tannins are firm but very approachable now, and the wine will last for many years yet. The finish is long and very satisfying. This is a seriously good red wine.
Price Point – $20
Would We Buy It? – we will buy more of this, as it is a big wine which brings it all. There is no obvious weakness here. You have to like big reds, but of course we do! Value list material.
An excellent Ventoux, and one you should look for. Anything under $20 is a steal.
A votre sante!
