Ponzi Vineyards began in the 1960s, when Dick and Nancy bought the land in Sherwood, Oregon and planted the initial vineyards in 1968. The Willamette Valley was not famous back then, and decades would go by before it became so for its exquisite Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Ponzi grew consistently throughout the years, adding a new winemaking facility in 2008 and a tasting room at the winery in 2013. Bought by Groupe Bollinger, a French conglomerate, in 2021, the winemaking here stays true to its sense of place. Let’s see what is in this bottle:
Wine: 2019 Ponzi Chardonnay Reserve
Winery Location: Sherwood, Oregon in the Willamette Valley
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: April 2024
Tasting Notes: Made with grapes from seven different vineyard sites within the Laurelwood District AVA, the juice is a light golden color, and a vibrant nose features creamy, vanilla aspects along with apples and spices. On the palate this is so smooth and velvety with pears, apples, spice and some lemon at the end. It finishes very long. This is one of those wines where you just think “delicious”. All Ponzi Chardonnay is finished in large , neutral oak which imparts minimal influence to the wine. The result is pretty wonderful.
Price Point – $45
Would We Buy It? – Yes. This is supremely delicous Chardonnay and we heartily recommend it.
We’ve tried several wines from Ponzi over the years, but after trying this bottle we clearly need to take a much closer look.
