Gumdrop? Are you kidding me?

I read thousands of wine reviews because wine is my hobby and I like to. In other posts I’ve written about the various flavors I sometimes can pull out of wine (although I wish I could do it more often), so it’s intriguing to see what others, especially the “experts”, have to say. There are

The Invasion of French Wine Country

Throughout history the French have fought wars and dealt with invaders. Romans, Germans, Austrians, British and Spaniards have taken a shot at them. The Romans of course did more than take a shot and stayed for a few hundred years. Now a new invasion is underway, fought without swords or guns and far more insidious;

Most Expensive Wines

I’ve mentioned in a few posts how some wines get crazy expensive. The wine just named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator jumped from $60 into the hundreds overnight. Petrus in Bordeaux (Pomerol) goes for over $2000. The great first growths, Latour, Margaux, Lafite, Mouton and Haut Brion bring over $1000 in big vintages.

Spectator Top Wine – Going, going, $$$$$

Just a follow up on the Wine Spectator Top 100 issue. As wrote in the last post, the number one wine is tough to get and frequently goes up drastically in price. You generally are never going to be able to buy it for what they list as the release price.

So I spent a

Review of Wine Spectator Top 100

This is the time of year that the Wine Spectator puts out their best of the year issue. Prior to the magazine release they tease them out by issuing a few at a time, day by day. In earlier days I used to really look forward to the list, as I expected it to be

A Retrospective Look at 2001 Monte Rosso Cab

As promised, here is a look back at the tasting notes from the 2001 Louis Martini Monte Rosso Cabernet from 2006 and 2009, compared with our recent bottle just opened on the Kennebunkport Trip this November. It has changed dramatically since the last time we tried it, in many ways, but it is still an

A Value Bordeaux and a Little About the 1855 Bordeaux Classification

There is nothing we like better than finding a value wine that delivers way beyond its price point. They are all around us, you just have to ferret them out. For me, Bordeaux in great vintage years offers a very fertile field for finding killer values, since all of the properties tend to make at

Large Format Bottles

I love large format bottles – not for everyday, but for special occasions they are cool. They’re also great to bring to parties. Some of them. Others are so big they are the party. There’s an article on the different large format sizes under the “Why Some Wine Knowledge” page.

This is a picture of
