Outstanding Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Quilt

Quilt’s Oak Knoll Vineyard

The Quilt label is part of the Copper Kane wine family, that was started by Joe Wagner after he sold his Meiomi label about ten years ago.  We’ve recently reviewed several wines from the group, including an unexpected Chardonnay and Rosé (which you can read about here) and some delicious Pinto Noir from the Belle Glos line (which you can read about here).  In this review we’ll take a look at some premium quality Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Quilt line.

Quilt’s AVAs in Napa Valley

Quilt is sourced from nine different AVAs in the iconic Napa Valley.  This gives Joe a patchwork, or quilt, of flavors and characteristics to choose from when assembling his Napa Cap.  The results, at least from our limited sampling, are impressive.  We suspect this is a wine that will hold to a consistent style over the years as the variety of vineyards will allow them to tailor the final wine, unlike a single vineyard bottling.

We sampled three different offerings from Quilt.  Here are our impressions:

2022 Quilt Napa Vally Cabernet Sauvignon: This juice had 2% Petite Sirah added to the Cabernet Sauvignon.  The color is a dark purple red.  A nose full of dark fruits, including blackberry and plum, caramel and a touch of balamic is rich and inviting.  The palate is also rich and full bodied.  Med+ tannins, nice acid and balance and a long finish wrap up a pretty classic and high quality Napa Valley Cab.  It is an exellent wine and a good value at the SRP of $40.  We paid less on sale.  Recommended.

2018 Quilt Cabernet Reserve: This reserve wine is made from the top 3% of the harvest at three different AVA vineyards.  This is very dark in color and full of dark fruits, balsamic and some oak.  Jammy and rich on the palate, it is also somehow refined, and you get a beautiful expression of fruit which stays focused.  It is just full bodied, elegant and a superior wine.  Really excellent.  SRP is $110  Also recommended if you don’t mind spending $100 on a bottle.

2016 Quilt Cabernet Reserve “The Grace of the Land”: We mentioned earlier how the variety of vineyards available likely give the winemaker the ability to maintain a more consistent style, and this wine is an example of that.  Two years older than its cousin above, this has almost the same profile.  Dark fruit, a rich expression and an elegance that mirrors the 2018 Reserve.  If there is a noticeable difference it is that this wine carries some savory notes that the 2018 did not have.  Otherwise very much like the 2018 Reserve, which is a very good thing.  Magnums were $190.  Also recommended.

The wines above are great examples of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, rich and expressive.  The standard Napa Valley Cab at $40 is a great value.  We love the reserve too, and if you’re comfortable at $100 a bottle it is a good choice.  The top end bottles would also make great gifts or party wines.

A votre santé!
