Top Shelf Soave

Soave is an intriguing white wine from northeast Italy.  Made primarly from the Garganega grape, it tends to be richer, with some body and more substance than something like a Pinot Grigio.  The vineyards around the city of Verona, in the Veneto region, provide the grapes.  There are two main designations, one within a DOC area and the other, the Superiore, from a more prestigious DOCG region designation.   A little Chardonnay or Trebbiano might find it’s way into the blend.

Those of us who are older might remember Soave Bolla wine, which was mass marketed in the United States many years ago.  While the mass advertising is long gone, you can still find it on the market today.  It is not the definition of what quality Soave is like.  I find Soave to be a superior white wine with many admirable qualities.  If you haven’t tried a good Soave, or any for that matter, here is one to look for.

Wine:    2022 Suavia Soave Monte Carbonare

Winery Location:  Veneto Region, Italy

Tasted By:   Neil & Cheri            Date:  January  2025

Tasting Notes: this has a rich nose of peach, apple and someting a little more tropical.  You get some funk as well and a whiff of an almost petrol-like aroma.  It comes from 70 year old vines, and that is what lends some of the minerality to the juice.  It is smooth, has some nice texture and is really delicious.  If I came across this in a blind tasting I would probably have guessed it was an old vine Riesling.

Price Point – arond $30, less on sale.

Would We Buy It?   Yes, this is delicious and a bit unusual.  I recommend it.

Try something a little out of the mainstream and maybe find a new favorite.

A votre santé!
