Over the years we’ve reviewed many wines from the Alentejo region of Portugal, and it is one of our favorite wine areas in that country. Mostly known for its big red wines, it also surprises with some crisp whites. The weather is hot, and environmentally friendly farming techniques are widespread. The wine below comes from one of the best producers in the region, Esporão.
Wine: 2022 Monte Velho Reserva Red
Winery Location: Alentejo, Portugal
Tasted By: Neil & Cheri Date: February 2025
Tasting Notes: the wine is dark, purple red with long legs. Lots of dark berry fruit fill the nose along with savory notes, anise and toasted oak. The palate follows suit with a beautiful core of berry fruit. It is just full bodied and carries a nice acid ridge that keeps it fresh and edgy. Tannins are medium, and it finishes with great length. This is a delicious and well made wine. Good value too. A blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira, Syrah and Touriga Nacional.
Price Point – $18
